NYC Kindergarten Fit Score

NYC Kindergarten Fit Score

A free school fit score spreadsheet of up to 50 NYC kindergarten programs, scored by how well each fits what matters to your family.

Please include your ZIP code. It is how we make sure we found the right building, since many street names repeat across the boroughs. You do not need to enter an apartment number.

We use your home address to measure distance and to find your zoned elementary school. We delete it when your spreadsheet is built, or if it can't be built.

What matters to your family?

Choose at least one Important factor or pill so we can rank your results.

When the city has not listed a detail for a program, we do not guess a value or score it as a miss. A detail you mark Important that the city has not listed counts as half credit, and your spreadsheet says "not listed."

How much does distance from home matter?
What kind of kindergarten program would you like?
Would you like a kindergarten with smaller classes?
Do you need early drop-off?
Do you need late pick-up?

The city's directory lists late pick-up as a feature of a program but does not say how late, on which days or what it costs, so ask the school.

Do you want an after-school program?
Do you want a school with no required uniform?

Choose the school, or up to 4 schools if your children will be at different ones. The spreadsheet then shows what the city's directory says about siblings at that school's programs, in the city's own words. Naming a school also counts it in the Fit Score, unless the school lists only Gifted & Talented programs, which are not scored. You can set that to Neutral on the My Priorities tab. MySchools shows which priorities apply to your child.

Choose the school. The spreadsheet then shows what the city's directory says about children who are in pre-K at that school, in the city's own words. Naming the school also counts it in the Fit Score, unless the school lists only Gifted & Talented programs, which are not scored. You can set that to Neutral on the My Priorities tab. MySchools shows which priorities apply to your child.

Do you want Gifted & Talented programs listed?

Gifted & Talented programs are not scored. If you say yes, they are listed on their own tab, nearest first, with the city's own words about how a child is considered.

          Your email address

No sign-up needed. You'll download your spreadsheet from this page as an Excel file, which also opens in Google Sheets or Numbers.

We never ask for your child's name or birth date. It is a short list of choices.

Your questionnaire is used to build this spreadsheet. We keep your email, your consent and your ZIP code, as our Privacy Policy describes, and never your child's name, your street address, or sensitive eligibility information.

          Questions parents ask

What is the NYC Kindergarten Fit Score?

A free tool from Leto for NYC families applying for kindergarten. You choose how much distance from home, the kind of program, smaller kindergarten classes, early drop-off, late pick-up, an after-school program, whether a uniform is required, language support and a dual language class matter. If you name a brother’s or sister’s school, or your child’s pre-K school, we count that too. We score NYC kindergarten programs on those choices and give you an Excel spreadsheet of up to 50 programs.

Does the Fit Score predict admission?

No. A Fit Score says how well a program fits what you told us. It is not a quality rating, and it doesn’t predict admission or tell you what to rank first. MySchools shows your child’s final priorities.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, and there is no account. We ask for your email and add you to Leto’s email list; you can unsubscribe anytime.

Will it tell me my zoned elementary school?

We check your address with the city’s Find a School lookup, and we name your zoned elementary school when the city’s lookup and our own copy of the zone map agree. When we can’t name one, the spreadsheet says why. MySchools shows your child’s final priorities.

          Which programs are included?

Kindergarten programs at public schools in the city’s directory: zoned and non-zoned programs, dual language and STEM Discovery programs. Gifted & Talented programs are listed on their own tab if you ask. Charter schools are not included. The directory is last year’s admissions round, and the spreadsheet says when we read it. Where the directory leaves out a detail, such as an after-school program, we may add it from another public source, and the spreadsheet says where each one came from.

What if my child has a brother or sister, or is in pre-K now?

If you name the school, the spreadsheet shows what the city’s directory says about siblings, or about children in pre-K, for that school’s programs, in the city’s own words. Naming a school also counts it in the Fit Score. If the school lists only Gifted & Talented programs, which are not scored, naming it changes no Fit Score. You can set that to Neutral on the My Priorities tab. It doesn’t predict admission; MySchools shows which priorities apply to your child.

What happens to my home address?

We use it to measure distance and to find your zoned elementary school. We keep only its ZIP code, and delete the street address once your spreadsheet is built, or if it can’t be built.

How do I use it with MySchools?

Use it to decide which programs to look at, then check current priorities and deadlines in MySchools and list programs there in your family’s own order of preference.

          About our information

For families applying for kindergarten starting in September 2027.

When the city has not listed a detail, we never treat it as "No." A detail you marked Important that the city has not listed counts as half credit, and its score says "not listed."

Some admissions details change from year to year. Always verify current priorities, deadlines and application information in MySchools.
