Questions parents ask
What is the NYC Middle School Fit Score?
A free tool from Leto for NYC families with a 5th grader. You choose how much distance from home, class size, a free after-school program, an extended day, a uniform, accelerated math and an accessible building matter, and which world languages, clubs and sports your child wants. We score NYC public middle school programs on those choices and give you an Excel spreadsheet of up to 50 programs.
Does the Fit Score predict admission?
No. A Fit Score says how well a program fits what you told us. It is not a school-quality rating, and it doesn’t predict admission or tell you what to rank first. MySchools shows each program’s priorities.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It is free, and there is no account. We ask for your email and add you to Leto’s email list; you can unsubscribe anytime.
Will it tell me my zoned middle school?
We check your address with the city’s Find a School lookup, and we name your zoned school when the city’s lookup and our own copy of the zone map agree. When we can’t name one, the spreadsheet says why. MySchools shows your child’s final priorities.
Which district should I choose?
The district your child goes to school in now. The first two numbers of the school code are its district: 02M104 is in District 2. If your child isn’t in a NYC public school, choose the district you live in.
Which schools are included?
Public middle school programs in the city’s current middle school directory. District 75 inclusion programs and the city’s autism and Academics, Career, and Essential Skills placement programs are not included, because they have their own application processes.
What happens to my home address?
We use it to measure distance and to find your zoned middle school. We keep only its ZIP code, and delete the street address once your spreadsheet is built, or if it can’t be built.
What happens to what I write about my child?
It is optional. We read it once to number the programs in your spreadsheet by how closely each fits it. It won’t add or remove programs or change any Fit Score. We use what you write only to build your spreadsheet.
How do I use it with MySchools?
Use it to decide which programs to look at, then check current admissions details in MySchools and list programs there in your family’s own order of preference.
About our data
For families applying in fall 2026 for middle school starting in September 2027.
When official data is missing, we treat it as unknown. We do not guess, fill in a value, treat missing data as "No," or count it against a program.
Some admissions details change from cycle to cycle. Always verify current requirements, priorities, assessments, auditions and application information in MySchools.
